I chose broadcasting as my major because I have always been drawn to storytelling. The ability to inform people about what is happening in the world around them, while also giving a voice to important issues and individuals, is something I find both meaningful and exciting. Broadcasting offers a unique platform for storytelling by combining visuals, sound, and clear communication to reach and connect with a wide audience in a powerful way.
From a young age, I have often been told that I have a strong and engaging speaking voice. Hearing that encouragement played a significant role in shaping my interest in television and broadcast media. Over time, I realized that broadcasting is a field where my natural strengths could be used effectively. Whether reporting news, anchoring a show, or narrating a story, I enjoy using my voice to inform, engage, and connect with viewers.
What draws me most to broadcasting is the amount of work that takes place behind the scenes. I have developed a strong interest in the many details that go into producing a successful television program. From planning segments and writing scripts to coordinating visuals and timing, the production process has become one of the most fascinating aspects of the field for me.
Initially, my focus was solely on being in front of the camera. However, as I progressed through my coursework, I gained a deeper appreciation for the technical and production elements of broadcasting. Learning how cameras operate, how footage is edited, and how production teams collaborate has shown me how essential these roles are to creating a polished and effective broadcast. This understanding has helped me become a more well-rounded student and storyteller.
A few semesters ago, I had the opportunity to take an advanced television production course that provided hands-on, real-world experience. In this class, we were divided into two groups and tasked with producing a complete show using packages and clips we created throughout the semester. This experience reinforced the importance of teamwork in broadcast journalism and highlighted how each role contributes to the success of the final product.
One of the most rewarding moments from that course was serving as a news anchor. Stepping into this role made my career goals feel tangible and confirmed that broadcasting is the path I want to pursue. While the process was stressful at times due to tight deadlines and high expectations, it was extremely rewarding to see our work come together in a finished production.
Working closely with my classmates taught me how to communicate effectively, manage time efficiently, and adapt in a fast-paced environment. Everyone brought different strengths to the project, and learning how to collaborate under pressure was a valuable experience that mirrors the realities of a professional newsroom

My favorite aspect of broadcasting is working with video. I enjoy going into the field to capture footage and gather visuals because it allows me to be actively involved in the storytelling process. Being on location adds energy and authenticity to a story, and strong visuals help bring the narrative to life for viewers.
In addition to videography, I also enjoy writing to video. Crafting scripts that complement visuals while delivering clear and engaging information can be challenging, but it is one of the most rewarding parts of the process. This skill has strengthened my ability to tell cohesive and compelling stories across multiple platforms.
Looking ahead, I am interested in continuing to develop my skills in writing, videography, and photography, particularly as they relate to web-based and digital platforms. I was introduced to multimedia storytelling in a previous course, and I am eager to explore a more in-depth approach to this evolving aspect of broadcast journalism. My career goal is to begin working at WCBI as a news anchor and, as I gain experience, eventually move to a larger news station where I can continue to grow and make an impact in the field of broadcast journalism.
