Grace Harvey Communication: Broadcast and Digital Journalism

I started my journey with broadcast all the way back in middle school, when I hosted the morning news for my school. From there I tried out for my high school’s media program. I was a member of the media arts program for two years. I learned many skills such as Adobe, writing and being comfortable on camera through Media Arts. Once I started looking for colleges, I knew Communication Broadcast and Digital Journalism was my only option. I feel in love with it at an early age and knew that the news world was for me.

I love the amount of awesome opportunities broadcast has given me. I worked on the Mississippi State social media team in the Office of Public Affairs for two and half years. Through this job I covered many events in the Starkville area and helped grow the social media accounts. I helped make TikTok’s, Instagram posts and Facebook posts.

I am also the emcee for MSU men’s and women’s basketball and baseball. Without my broadcast knowledge and training I would have never been able to achieve such a position. I have also interned at KTBS 3 news.  I also anchored and reported for Take 30 news. Every opportunity I have had happened because of my experience as a broadcast student.

Through every internship, job and class I have been able to grow as a journalist. I have enjoyed watching how much I have improved since I started. Through more creative writing and b roll. And stronger interviews and stand ups.

Every package I made through Take 30 I have loved. The ability to share people’s stories from all over was a dream! My favorite part is the interviewing process. I enjoy diving into people’s stories and telling the story they want to share to the world. I have done packages on breast cancer survivors, fire victims, events in the community and so much more. The news is the people’s outlet to share stories and things going on in the area.

I am interested in continuing to strengthen my broadcast skills. Through more creative b-roll and writing stronger scripts. I want my stories to stay in people’s minds. I want to be able to share deep stories that influence people of the community. You can make smaller stories interesting by adding more creative elements.

I have started applying for jobs all which are news based. I want to be a multimedia journalist and work at a news station. I hope to one day become an anchor after I get more professional experience. I have applied to many stations and want to move and see different places.

I also hope to use my emcee skills in my future career paths as well. I want to try and emcee for events around the city I work in. One of my favorite parts of emceeing is engaging with the audience and getting to know the fans. It’s always fun to adlib with fans and come up with new things to say!

I feel like part of the reason I love broadcasting so much is because it gives me such an opportunity to use my personality. I have always been very social, and this job allows me to use that as a part of my career. It is hard to be in this career without being personable. I love connecting to people through my work.

Mississippi States communication program has allowed me to work and be creative as a journalist. I am thankful for the classes and the professional experience I have been able to gain as such a young journalist in the field.
