Hello, my name is David Randall. Welcome to my Feature Story, enjoy!
I chose to major in Broadcast and Digital Journalism at Mississippi State because I was drawn to creative production, athletics marketing, and the possibility of working in the film industry. Coming out of high school in Meridian, Mississippi, I knew I wanted a career that blended creativity with storytelling. I imagined myself writing for television shows, working behind the scenes in sports media, or contributing to large-scale productions. Journalism and broadcasting felt like the best academic pathway to explore those interests, giving me both technical skills and creative freedom
Although I will not enter the news industry, I truly admire the skills broadcasters develop. Speaking clearly, working under deadlines, and presenting information confidently are impressive talents. I know I could succeed on camera, but my passion lies behind it—planning, producing, editing, and shaping stories. I also enjoy the business and marketing side of media, which has helped me realize that my future will likely combine strategy with creativity. Some of my most meaningful academic experiences came from the backpack journalism projects in Advanced Television. I loved stepping outside the classroom, interviewing real people, and sharing their stories. These projects taught me empathy, curiosity, and how powerful storytelling can be.
I also had an incredible experience directing, writing, and producing a music video in my Music Video Production class, which confirmed how much I enjoy leading creative projects. I've also worked on other big projects. (Isaac Smith return), (NCAA Track & Field National Championship), (Extended Cut Mississippi State Football), (NeonFrog Marketing), (NCAA Softball), (TwoCirclesMade). I recieved the Videographer of the year award in my Junior spring semester. I have accumlated over 2+ Million Views over twitter and instagram from my social posts.
That class stood out even more because of my professor, Marty Lang, who has been one of my greatest mentors. He shared his experiences in the film industry and encouraged me to believe that my goals were achievable. Through that class, I learned how to manage a creative team, communicate a vision, and bring an idea to life. It was the first time I truly felt like I was doing what I was meant to do.
Video is my favorite form of media without question. I have been a creative video intern for Mississippi State athletics for four years, starting my first semester of freshman year and continuing through my senior year. I served as the only football video intern, filming on the sidelines, attending practices, producing media content, and interviewing players. I have also worked with softball, track and field, baseball, and men’s tennis, gaining experience across multiple sports.
One of my favorite highlights has been traveling with the softball team. Getting to know the players personally changed the way I view athletics and storytelling. Samantha Ricketts, the head coach, is one of the kindest and most genuine leaders I have ever worked with. Traveling with the team gave me the chance to explore different parts of the country, but more importantly, it helped me understand that athletes are more than jerseys and statistics—they are real people with emotions, personalities, and stories worth telling
In this class, I am especially interested in strengthening my teamwork skills. I want to continue growing as a collaborator, leader, and listener. I have learned that success is not about doing everything alone but about trusting the people around you. As a former high school football player, I know that being a good teammate is essential to reaching any goal.
Looking ahead, my career plans are clearer than ever. After graduation, I may have the opportunity to work as the Assistant Director of Creative Production for athletics. I also plan to continue my education by earning a marketing degree or eventually pursuing my MBA. Long term, I hope to become a Director of Creative Production or a Lead Director of Communications for an athletic department, combining creativity, leadership, and business strategy. I want to build a career that is both fulfilling and financially successful. Whether in collegiate athletics, corporate marketing, or the film industry as a writer or producer, I am confident that my experiences at Mississippi State have prepared me to succeed.
