Hey there! I’m Adrianna Rhodes from Flowood, Mississippi. I’m a senior communication major with a concentration in broadcast and digital journalism.

When I arrived at Mississippi State, I decided to pursue broadcasting journalism because of the impact media has had on me. From the countless stories that inspired me as a little girl to the ones that continue to inspire me now, I’ve always been drawn to the power of storytelling.

I enjoy stories of all kinds, from feel-good moments to stories of great importance, and even the heavier, but necessary, ones. All my life, I’ve loved meeting new people, talking with them, and hearing their stories.

I’ve had countless conversations that left a lasting impact on me, and I appreciate how broadcasting takes these stories and amplifies them. Whether through photos, videos, or direct conversations, broadcasting gives these stories a bigger voice.

I love this concentration because it allows me to remain endlessly curious. For the rest of my life, I will continue to engage in conversations and listen, which is an essential skill when sharing stories that belong to other people. A story has the power to change lives, and broadcasting provides the platform to do exactly that.

During my time at Mississippi State, one project I particularly enjoyed was for my Backpack Journalism class, taught by Ms. Victoria Bailey. I created a feature story for a local horse ranch in Starkville, owned by Beverly Jones.

I had visited the ranch before filming the assignment, so it was great to return and hear the story of the ranch and its history firsthand. I also loved interacting with some of the horses and ponies during my time there, which made the experience even more memorable.

My favorite areas are writing and video. Photography is something I’m still developing, especially with my professional camera, though I do enjoy taking photos with my phone. Writing is where I feel strongest. I enjoy being creative, crafting detailed and concise narratives without being overbearing.

In this class, I’m particularly interested in learning more about photography and how to capture shots that complement my writing. I’m confident in my writing abilities, so I want to enhance my skills in photography and learn tips for using my camera effectively.

As I approach graduation in May, my plan is to work as a reporter, preferably out of state. I’m thinking somewhere in the West, but anywhere outside Mississippi would make me happy. I’ve been interested in entertainment for as long as I can remember, so I hope to focus on entertainment journalism and the feel-good stories that bring people together.
